## Why Content Decay
Goes Unnoticed

Pages rarely crash overnight. They lose a few clicks every month until a page that used to bring traffic barely shows up anymore.

### Slow Declines Hide in Totals

Sitewide traffic can look stable while a handful of once-strong pages lose clicks month after month.

### One URL at a Time

Search Console makes you open each page and set a comparison by hand. Nobody does that for hundreds of pages.

### Spreadsheet Trend Tracking

Exporting page data for every month and building a pivot table takes hours, and it is out of date the next week.

### Seasonality or Decay?

A drop compared with last month might just be the season. Without a year-over-year view you can't tell the two apart.

### No Clear Priority

Even when you know traffic is down, you don't know which pages need a refresh first and which are fine.

### Found Too Late

By the time someone notices a key page has slipped, its rankings are gone and winning them back takes much longer.

The Content Decay Heatmap shows every page over time and flags the ones that are decaying

## See Every Page
Over Time, at a Glance

One color-shaded grid for the whole site, plus a table that does the comparisons for you and tells you which pages need attention.

### Page-by-Period Heatmap

Each row is a page and each column is a month or week. The cell shows clicks or impressions, and a darker shade means more traffic.

### Threshold Slider

Adjust the color threshold (75% by default) until you see a clear range of shades, so strong and weak periods stand out.

### Months, Weeks and Years

Switch between a monthly and a weekly view, pick the date range, and select which years to include. Hover a cell to see the exact value.

### Decaying Pages Table

Compares each page's clicks in the last 2 months with the previous 2 months and the same period last year, plus clicks from its top 10 queries. Pages are marked Critical or Warning.

### Scheduled Email Reports

Add the Heatmap Overview and the Content Decay table to a scheduled email report and get a PDF daily, weekly, monthly or on a custom interval.

### Available to Your AI Assistant

Connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other MCP client to SERPView over MCP and your assistant can pull the heatmap data and the list of decaying pages.

## Frequently Asked
Questions

Everything you need to know about the Content Decay Heatmap in SERPView.

Content decay is the gradual loss of search traffic on a page that used to perform well. It usually happens when the content gets outdated, competitors publish better pages, or search intent changes. Refreshing decaying pages is often faster than creating new ones.

SERPView loads clicks and impressions for each page, one month or one week at a time, across the date range you choose. Every page becomes a row and every period a column, shaded by its value, so a page losing traffic shows up as a row that fades over time.

The Decaying Pages table checks three things for each page: clicks in the last 2 months compared with the 2 months before, clicks in the last 2 months compared with the same period last year, and clicks from queries where the page ranks in positions 1 to 10, compared with the previous 2 months.

A page is Critical when all three metrics are declining and Warning when two of the three are declining. Pages with one or no declining metric are considered healthy and are left out. Critical pages are listed first, then pages with the most clicks.

The threshold sets how much traffic a cell needs to reach the full color. The default is 75%. Lower it when most cells look pale, raise it when everything looks dark, until you see a useful range of shades.

Yes. Toggle between clicks and impressions, switch between a monthly and a weekly view, and select which years to show. The report recommends a 16-month date range to see long-term trends.

Both views use your own Google Search Console data. If you have connected Bing Webmaster Tools, you can switch the data source to Bing. The heatmap respects your date range and dashboard filters; the Decaying Pages table always uses the fixed comparison windows described above.

Yes. Add the Heatmap Overview and Content Decay reports to a scheduled email report to receive a PDF with up to 100 rows each. If you connect Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any other MCP client to SERPView over MCP (Model Context Protocol), your assistant can fetch both reports too.

The Content Decay Heatmap is a premium feature and is not available on the Free plan.
