What is indexability, and why does a single blocked page matter?

Indexability is Google's decision about whether a URL is allowed into the search index. One stray noindex tag, one wrong canonical, one blocking robots.txt rule, and a page you spent weeks writing silently disappears from organic search.

Indexability is the gate between Google crawling a page and Google storing it in the index. Crawling happens when Googlebot can reach the URL over HTTP. Indexing happens when Google decides the page is worth keeping. The two are different stages, and a page can be crawled repeatedly without ever being indexed if any of the indexability signals disagree.There are five signals Google weighs when it makes that call: the HTTP status code, the meta robots tag, the X-Robots-Tag response header, the canonical tag, and the robots.txt access path. If any of them says no, Google usually says no. The trickiest cases are the conflicts: a page returns 200, the meta robots tag is indexable, the canonical points to itself, but robots.txt is blocking Googlebot from ever reaching the HTML. What this indexability checker audits

Every signal Google weighs when deciding whether to keep a page in the index.

  • HTTP status codechecks 200 OK, 301, 302, 404, 410, and 5xx responses. Only a 200 (or sometimes a 301 chain to a 200) lets a page reach the index.
  • Meta robots tagflags noindex, nofollow, noarchive, and nosnippet directives in the HTML. A noindex tag blocks indexing even on a 200 response.
  • X-Robots-Tag headercatches noindex rules sent in the HTTP response header. Common on PDFs, images, and CDN-served assets.
  • Canonical tagverifies a self-referencing canonical. A canonical pointing elsewhere reassigns indexing credit to a different URL.
  • Robots.txt accessfetches /robots.txt and tests whether Googlebot is allowed to crawl the URL path. Disallow rules block crawling, not indexing directly.
  • Sitemap inclusionchecks whether the URL is listed in the sitemap. Sitemap inclusion is a hint, not a guarantee, but absence is worth flagging.
  • Indexing conflict detectorcompares all five signals and flags contradictions like indexable meta robots but blocked robots.txt.
  • Redirect chain checkfollows the URL through 3xx hops and reports the final destination. Chains longer than 3 hops waste crawl budget and dilute signals.
